Its that time again to highlight a local wedding vendor! This month we sit down (virtually of course) with Kelsey McQuiston. Tell us about yourself! When did you get started? What made you decide to become a hairstylist? What do you like most about being a wedding hairstylist?
I am entering my 15th year as a stylist. Shortly after graduation, I realized that becoming a stylist was more than a passion, it was what I was being called to do. Not only do I love the creative challenge of my job, I love making people feel beautiful. I truly enjoy making connections with people and finding what brings them joy! As a wedding stylist, I am able to take a piece of the brides dream and vision and bring it to life! I always feel so blessed to be invited into such a special day.
What does your training look like? How do you stay on top of the latest trends in wedding hair?
Training has evolved over the years. What used to be in-person classes can now be accomplished virtually. I enjoy tuning in to training sessions by top stylists to learn new techniques. I am frequently on social media to stay on top of the latest trends in weddings and bridal hair.
What should brides know about booking you for their wedding?
I am available for bridal services both in the salon and on location. I will do all that I can to accommodate the location and schedule.
How far in advance do brides need to book your services?
I recommend that brides book services as soon as they book a venue!
Do you offer a trial session for brides to try different hairstyles? If so, what are some advantages of having a trial session?
I prefer that a bride have a trial session a few weeks prior to the wedding day. This allows me to get a better understanding of the brides true style and expectations. It also allows me to tailor a design to the brides specific texture, length, etc.
What should brides prepare and bring with them to their first meeting with you? How many times do you typically meet with a bride prior to the wedding day?
I typically meet with a bride at least twice before the wedding day. I like for brides to bring pictures of color scheme, wedding dress, and details that encompass the overall feel of the wedding. Most brides typically already have a few pictures of what they envision for their wedding hair. If any veils or hairpieces are being used, it is useful to see them also.
What does it look like for you on a brides wedding day? What preparations are required?
Preparation can vary depending on location. I make sure that I have all tools and products needed for various hair types and designs. Always extra bobby pins and hairspray!
What will your interaction with the bride look like on the wedding day? What should the bride expect? How long will the appointment take?
My ultimate goal for a bride is to feel pampered and known. I love hearing all about them during the appointment. Brides can expect the appointment to take approximately an hour.
What do you wish brides knew about your services?
My job is to truly serve the bride and her dream! I am probably more critical of the work I am doing than the bride will be.
Are there certain things a bride can do to make the process of working with you easier? What are some dos and donts?
I ask that brides keep an open mind when finding the perfect design. They also should expect to be informed of any services needed to achieve the look (color, extensions, haircut, etc.). Please give input and ask questions as the appointment progresses.
What are some things brides should consider that are specific to hair? Do you recommend different styles for certain times of the year/weather/dress style?
It is always best for brides to consider their own length and texture when choosing a style. I recommend that a bride not choose a style that is totally out of character. Season, wedding location, and dress style all play a part in the final design!
Final Thoughts
I (Ciara) can speak firsthand that Kelsey goes above and beyond for her clients to make their hair visions come to life! When she says she is more critical of the work she does than the bride is, she is right. She doesnt stop until every detail is perfect. She is truly talented, and I highly recommend her!
